Advancing to Field Demonstrations

Hi Friend of Mitico,

September is here with its plethora of meetings and gatherings. I am lucky to come to Boston for Decarb Tech Invest on Sep 9 and 10, Houston for Energy and Climate Week, and the NY Climate Week. If you are attending one of these – or all three, let’s reconnect in person!

I am excited about what is to come for Mitico in the coming months and want to congratulate our R&D team on hitting a key target – our third-generation sorbent Carbionik™ achieved the expected CO₂ capture performance in initial tests, validating improvements in material design and fabrication processes. Operationally, we’ve completed construction of our latest pilot unit and are initiating field trials, marking the beginning of real carbon capture at a customer site. We are equally excited to announce Mitico’s selection into Abu Dhabi’s prestigious Hub71 program, which will accelerate our growth and global partnership.

Centennial 2.0 Pilot Construction Completed

After months of intense engineering effort, our Centennial 2.0 pilot unit – a 0.3 ton-CO₂/day fixed-bed carbon capture system – is finally built and ready for deployment. This full-scale demonstration platform is being put to its pace with simulated flue gas for final adjustments before shipment to Canada. There, researchers from Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), supported by a generous NGIF industry grant, will rigorously test the system to validate its performance under challenging operating conditions.

This achievement is a major technical milestone for Mitico – our second pilot plant is moving from the shop floor to the field. Alan Gu, Mitico’s co-founder and CTO, has been instrumental in this success. Alan designed and coordinated the construction and integration of Centennial 2.0 while simultaneously supporting our other pilot project, balancing efforts between the Canadian unit and the earlier Centennial 1.1 system in Thailand. His hands-on leadership ensured that fabrication challenges (from welding adjustments to wiring and safety interlocks) were resolved swiftly to keep the project on track. “It’s incredibly satisfying to see the fully assembled system ready to ship,” Alan noted, reflecting on the long hours and trans-Pacific teamwork involved.

Field Testing Begins in Thailand

In parallel with our Canadian build, Mitico’s first pilot unit – Centennial 1.1 – is gearing up for action at a customer site in Thailand. This smaller-scale system was installed earlier this year, and after overcoming some commissioning hurdles, it is now entering initial operational trials. Throughout the summer, our team worked closely with local partners at the site to address and resolve integration challenges. We upgraded electrical components to meet strict safety standards (including installing explosion-proof hardware) and ironed out control system issues that had caused delays.

With these fixes complete, we will commence exploratory CO₂ capture runs at the Thailand site soon. The pilot will operate on real flue gas from an industrial boiler at the host facility, allowing us to collect performance data in an actual industrial environment for the first time. Alan Gu has been coordinating daily with the on-site technicians and our remote engineers to support this effort. We’re grateful to our Thai partners for their collaboration and will keep everyone updated as we hit key milestones during the test program.

Mitico Joins Hub71 – Expanding to Abu Dhabi

We are thrilled to announce that Mitico has officially been accepted into the Hub71 program in Abu Dhabi. Hub71 is a global tech hub backed by Mubadala and international partners, and our selection is a significant opportunity for us to establish a presence in the Middle East. Starting this September, we will be one of a select group of startups participating in Hub71’s intensive growth platform. Over the coming months, our team (spearheaded by Ron Rogers, CEO of Mitico International) will collaborate with Hub71’s network of mentors and corporates to refine our commercial strategy for the region. The program is designed to connect high-potential startups with regional corporations, investors, and innovators, and we’re already seeing strong interest – including potential partnership and investment inquiries from the UAE – as a result of our acceptance. Stay tuned for updates as we embark on this exciting chapter, including events and demo days in Abu Dhabi later this year.

Mitico-X: Wuwei Mo – Team Member Spotlight

For this month’s team highlight, we’re pleased to introduce Wuwei Mo, one of the driving forces behind Mitico’s analytical and research efforts. Wuwei joined Mitico Inc. in the U.S. to apply his passion for sustainable technology and his expertise in engineering analysis to our carbon capture mission. As a Techno-Economic Analyst on our team, he plays a crucial role in bridging the gap between lab research and real-world application. Wuwei has been instrumental in developing and refining our techno-economic analysis (TEA) models – the tools that project how our system will perform financially and operationally at scale. Working closely with our VP of Engineering, Léopold, he helped complete a comprehensive cost-performance model for our 3 tpd pilot, evaluating different sorbent regeneration scenarios to guide our design decisions. He also contributes to our life-cycle assessment (LCA) studies, ensuring we quantify the full environmental impact of deploying Mitico’s technology.

Why I chose Mitico:
During the last two years of my undergraduate studies, I carried out several research projects focused on converting CO₂ into value-added chemicals through electrocatalysis, with an emphasis on high efficiency and cost-effectiveness. That experience sparked my passion for climate mitigation and, more specifically, CO₂ elimination. While pursuing my Master’s degree at UC Berkeley, I had the opportunity to work on partner projects that exposed me to cutting-edge carbon capture approaches being deployed in industry. Those experiences convinced me to dedicate my career to this field. Mitico felt like the perfect fit: a team tackling tough carbon capture challenges with technology that is both advanced and cost-conscious, and a platform where I could contribute while continuing to learn.

Overcoming our early testing bottleneck:
At the beginning of our R&D work, one of the biggest constraints was our limited testing capacity — especially the ability to run long, repeated sorbent cycles to measure durability, which is critical for scaling up. To solve this, I took the initiative to design and build additional automated test stations. By repurposing existing instruments and combining my chemical engineering background with newly learned electrical engineering skills, I developed four fully automated stations with advanced controls and monitoring. These systems allowed us to run sorbents continuously, 24/7, dramatically increasing our throughput and removing a major obstacle to faster iteration.

Rewarding moments:
One of my proudest achievements has been getting those automated stations operational. Watching systems I designed run flawlessly around the clock has been deeply rewarding, not only because it sped up our R&D timelines, but also because it gave me firsthand insight into how thoughtful process design and automation can turn lab concepts into industrially relevant results.

What truly stands out about Wuwei is his love of tackling complex problems. Whether it’s analyzing how sorbent replacement schedules affect cost per ton of CO₂, or figuring out the optimal way to integrate humidity control without breaking the energy budget, Wuwei dives into the details with enthusiasm. Beyond his technical contributions, Wuwei has quickly become a beloved member of the team. We appreciate his positive attitude, meticulous approach, and willingness to help others understand the finer points of carbon capture economics. We’re lucky to have you on board, Wuwei – thank you for all you do!
